    That's the problem - I can't get a decent reading. The dipstick goes in either side up, and the reading depends on which side is up, or the reading is so unclear you can't tell. I seem to remember my Cortina used to do the same thing.

    Well the next possibility is that you need to switch the engine off and dip within the next 10 seconds. I do that for the BW35's. Otherwise splash ruins the reading. I have the dip stick wiped and ready to dip just after I turn off the key. Dip it always with the loop handle on the dip stick facing down.
