How difficult is it to move the tensioner off the belt? Is it sticky in its movement etc.
cheers
Nick
Hi All,
About 100km ago the 110 suddenly started making a screeching / belt slipping noise whenever i applied a bit of the right foot.
The belt is the original, has done 60,000km, as are the tensioner and idler pulley's. The vehicle is a late 2006.
I am assuming the screeching is the noise of the belt slipping and not the idler or tensioner pulley bearings because the noise only comes about when I press the loud pedal and put the engine under load.
The belt is generally in good condition with no rips or splits in it.
Question:
With no obvious way to increase the tension on the belt, whats the fix? New belt?
From memory, the belt tensioner is sprung loaded to apply the correct pressure to the belt. Looking at it yesterday from underneath seemed to confirm this.
Ive attached a couple of photo's of the belt and tensioner pulley. The belt has 2 lines marked on it that match the groove in the pulley.
Opinions and suggestions please.
Thanks
Jon

you sure its not the manifold studs broken, makes the same noise,
Just been outside to check the tensioner bearing. All's good on that front.
When I pulled the tensioner away from the belt, though it didnt seem to have much tension on. Wiggled it back and forth a bit and it seemed to 'go further back' from where it came.
time for a drive!

its makes the same noise, had a few td5s come in with that problem and its been broken studs allmost everytime,
the tensioner needs a lil force to move it, it dont need a braker bar to move it just say a normal sized spaner, i back them with a 3/8 drive ratch,![]()
How can I tell if its the manifold studs?
Whats should I be looking for?
From memory they are pretty well burried under pipes, covers etc etc. I suspect the normal ones to go would be at the back end of the block where presumably it gets the hottest?
Thanks

I've had the fan belt screech after going through a lot of dust. Can come and go for quite a while until it wears off.

No matter what the problem - there's a solution. You've just got to find it.
2013 Discovery 4 TDV6 3.0
2015 Defender 90 - The TARDIS (Gone)
2003 Defender 110 - The Yellow Peril (Gone but remembered fondly)
2001 Discovery II TD5 (Gone)
1986 County V8 (Gone)
I've had the same. I usually get the engine warmed up, let it idle and then pour 2 or 3 litres of water onto the belt while the engine is running. This always fixes it.
That said, I'm not sure about Yorkshire Jon's situation. Dirty belts tend to squeak mostly straight after the engine starts from cold (more load from the alternator), or on lock with the steering (more load from power steering pump). The fact that it's heard on acceleration makes me also very suspicious of the exhaust studs and subsequent leaking, which is a common TD5 problem.
Just feeding more power shouldn't affect the belt.
Cheers,
Lionel
Just get the boost to kick by applying the right foot with some force. If you hear a high pitched squeal, more than likely the bolts. They are easy enough to check when the motor is cool. Just have to get your arm in the right places. Just take your time and they should be easy to find and easy to check they are not loose and all still there..
