    SII TD5 Fuel Filter Warm

    Team,

Had the Disco serviced yesterday and they made a comment that my fuel filter was warm / hot to touch. The mechanic seemed to think this was odd, but could not tell me what would be happening.

I am a bit non-plussed, What am I supposed to make of such information? I have never noticed (nor can I say deliberately checked) the fuel filter's temp before after running, is this an issue?

    Advcie appreciated.

    Cheers

    Mark

Absolutly not! don't give it a second thought!
The fuel on most diesels is circulated from the tank, through the filter, through the engine, and back to the tank. In the TD5's the fuel acually runs through the head as well, and there is a fuel cooler on the engine.the fuel cooler uses water from the cooling system to keep it "cool" but this water can be up at 80 degrees or higher!
As far as I know all diesels heat the fuel to varing degrees, mine is the same.
You'll find the whole tank gets warm too!

I'm guessing they either don't do many diesels, or are looking to make some extra money for their christmas drinks!!

    Cheers,

The service guys don't know much about LR's,or for that matter diesels.
Going to an independant LR specialis is the go!

Yep my filter is almost too hot to touch after a run, as others have said, this is normal.

not saying you dont know anything about landrover, just diesels.

Somewhere around here I still have the receipt from a certain authorized dealer that had them charging me to change the 8 spark plugs on a td5.

    i do yes,

and our guys out the back actuly do try hard to do good work,

i just dont see why every one hates dealers so much,, yes i no the hr rate is stuped, but we dont set that, i my self couldent aford to have my car serviced at the full going rate, witch is probly why i can only aford to have my car as i get things cost, even then its still bloody expensive,

but every other place is god, id like to no if other brands cop the same thing as landrover people do, "ohh dont go to the dealer they will just rip you off' and they no nothing about the cars they work on,"

and i think im right in saying that most of the people who work at this independant LR specialist actuly worked and trained at dealers to start with

in my experience its rarely the guys out the back, not to start with anyway.

usually its the idiot cost cutting makeapenny middle managers out the front that are trying to get their names up in lights.

Ive had many many arguments with incompetent middle managers over lots of things including a couple where Ive had the middle manager call the head of the service department and several "I told you so's" were leveled at said middle management.

Eventually this crap filters down to the guys on the floor and they stop caring and thats when it goes bad and then worse.

not many things just little things like

"how can you tell me the brake pads were changed when the match mark alignments on all 20 wheel nuts are still perfect? is your tyre changing guy that good?"

"What do you mean you put synthetic oil in the engine as a courtesy? synthetic oil is the manufactures spec"

"Pretty certain that as part of a tyre rotation you put the spare wheel back on the carrier not in the back of the vehicle"

"how did you fill up the oil on the diff? the witness marks on the filler plug is untouched"

"call me pretentious but since Im holding her copy of the "fixed price service agreement" in my hand with your signature on it shes not going to pay for the unauthorized repair work you carried out on her out of warrenty car especially since you went to all the effort of attaching a second page to it that doesnt have her signature on it I'll have a copy of that as well for evidence reasons."

"Damn straight Im not paying for the wash, cut and polish you had your boys spend X hours putting on my defender I didnt ask for it AND you didnt do it right, theres swirl marks in the wax"

"Explain to me how you change the camber angles and toe in on the rear end of a defender"

"Why would I pay for the services of a locksmith I gave you the keys and you locked them in the car? why is that my responsibility?"

I will freely admit that generally most of the OEM showroom brand new dealers are bucket loads better than the guys who try to flog them second hand. They have cars go out that in at least 3 cases Ive checked out were dangerously unroadworthy in one instance the lhr brakes were making metal filings because it was trying to stop on the pistons.
