URGENT O-RING ON CRANKSHAFT BEHIND GEAR

I am replacing the front crank shaft seal and have all the parts but did not get a new O-ring that goes over the shaft behind the crank gear. All the spares shops are closed so is there anyone out there that has a spare new one that I can buy or can someone put me in touch with someone that sells spares over the weekend.

I am in Sydney but I'll drive if needs be seeing as we are going on holiday and I need to get this done this weekend.

    Please help!

if its just a standard O ring (you dont mention which engine) you can get them from hyds shops or get an oring fabrication kit from somehwere like blackwoods.

if its a specific seal good luck.

you MIGHT get away with doing a temp job using injected gasket sealastic. wipe the crank with clean oil inject the sealastic and then let it setup over night.

Thx, I still have the original seal and it still looks in good condition so just want to replace in case.

    It's a 94 Defender Tdi.

Is this just a standard seal? Will there be a shop opne now where I can match this o-ring?

Gve Ben Willis (KLR Automotive LR specialists) a call on 0431 529 520

There may be someone at the workshop (02) 4721-3675.

Or try Land Vehicle Spares at Silverdale (alos LR specialists) 02 4774-1741 I think they are open Sat arvo - I can't check as their website seems to be gone.

If it's a standard 'O' ring, you could be lucky at Auto One or Repco at Waitara - a bit closer than Silverdale or Penrith.

Thx for all the replies. I have another issue. I am not sure I was supplied the correct seal for the crank. I removed the previous one which disintegrated completely when I tried to pry it loose.

What is the part number for the seal behind the crank gear and how do I go about fitting it?

How do I ensure that the spot where I need to fit the new seal is completely clean seeing as it's difficult to get in there and the seal broke completely on removal?

I haven't had the joy of replacing that seal myself and I'm afraid that the RAVE manual doesn't give too many clues so I hope you work it all out and are successful.

Here's what RAVE says on the subject :-

    CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL
    Service repair no - 12.21.14
    Remove
    1.
Remove crankshaft gear. See Crankshaft gear
    2.
Prise out oil seal from front cover.
    Refit
    3.
Lubricate a new crankshaft oil seal with clean
    engine oil.
    4. With lip side leading, drive in seal squarely using
    special tool
    LRT-12-079.
    5. Fit crankshaft gear. See Crankshaft gear

    CRANKSHAFT GEAR
    Service repair no - 12.65.25
    Remove
    1.
Remove camshaft drive belt. See Camshaft
    drive belt
    2.
If the crankshaft gear cannot be removed by
    hand, use special tool
    LRT-12-078 with main
body and thrust button from special tool
LRT-12-031, as illustrated . Withdraw gear
    complete with ’O’ ring seal.
    Refit
    3.
Lubricate new ’O’ ring seal with petroleum jelly
and slide onto crankshaft, taking care not to
    damage seal on woodruff keys.
    4. Fit crankshaft gear and tap fully home ensuring
’O’ ring seal is properly seated.
    5. Fit camshaft drive belt. See Camshaft drive
    belt

ERR 4575 is the crank seal, ERR4576 is the outer timing case seal to balancer.
An Oring from a Toyota Hilux/ cruiser etc Diesel fuel filter sensor will fit. Use a little sealant too if you like.
I use the crank gear (reversed and slid down the crank) to push the seal in square. Use the crank bolt and washer with some spacers and screw it in.

Be very careful that the bore where the seal fits is undamaged during the seal removal process. Don't ask me HOW I know about this....

Thx, how do I know the bore is clean from previous sealant? What type of sealant should I use amd how liberally should I apply it?
