    coil question 3.9 v8

    car: 94 d1 es v8 auto (278000klms)

well being the holiday season i have spent a few $$ spoiling my d1, like engine watchdog/ driving lights/arb compressor/ roof racks.

i have noticed on the engine watchdog in traffic/at lights the disco rises to 100-102 degrees
things like all new hoses/temp sencors/radiator/flushed, have been replace i know the viscus is working

what i want to know is can i run the thermo fans of the + on the coil
(so they turn off with ignition=no flat battrery) i will of course run a fuse and a switch so i can turn them off manually

will this harm the coil in anyway( currently the engine watch dog is wired like this)
any help or sugestions or criticism i sappreciated

So you have a "Viscus" fan and Twin thermos do you ? How did you fit that in ?
Methinks your are looking at those two puny little fans in front of the Air-con condensor , If they are wired in the standard way they allready turn off when ignition is turned off . What you observe is probably that "Working" Viscous fan pulling a draft over the twin fans causing them to rotate .appearing to me turned on ,
Is the 100-102 degrees a Problem at idle in traffic with the air-con off or on ? Is that a little warm ? maybe your Flush and Viscous unit arent actually doing the Job ?
Afterall , what is the problem ? overheating or fans running on flattening battery ?

The a/c condenser fans don't do a lot of cooling for the engine. Check the viscous fan is operating as it should.

I chucked both the viscous and the condenser fans and fitted EL Falcon thermos. They ramp up and down as needed using a Delta Current Controller to keep the alternator happy and come on automatically when the aircon is switched on. They pull enough air through the radiator and condenser to keep everything super cool.

The + side of the coil is a baaad place to connect accessories. Anything you connect there will 1. be subject to electrical noise from the coil operating and 2. will rob the coil of power as the wire is just big enough for the coil alone. Any ignition positive you need should be sourced under the dash. Fans should not run off ign circuits. Accessory circuits are designed for stuff you don't need while cranking. The strongest supplies are in the ignition switch harness that enters the fuse panel under the steering wheel. There are also spare connections in the fuse box. Use a test light or multi meter to find a suitable circuit.

As mentioned your fans are probably condenser fans and you can get them to come on with the air conditioner switch. You just have the thermostat not on ice cold or the compressor disconnected.

ok thanks for that, that just what i wanted to find out i will now just wire everything of the second battry, its a deep cycle with a isolator, and not from the coil

Easy peasy, use a relay to switch the battery power on. The ign coil +ve will be safe to switch on the relay (connect +ve to term. 86, earth to term. 85) Power from the batt to 30, your accessory to 87. Still better to get power under the dash though. Cheers.
