    Triple battery setup

    Hi all

I am thinking about getting a second auxillary battery to run my 80 litre waeco fridge/freezer for camping.

I currently have a 105 amp/hr aux battery hooked up using a Voltage Sensative Relay (VSR) and seems to work well, but the 80 litre waeco seems to kill the aux battery after just an over night stop - (Runs about 10 hours with vehicle switched off)

I have this aux battery in the battery box (1998 Defender HCPU) under the passenger seat. I am thinking of placing a second 105 amp/hr aux battery in the rear tub in a plastic battery box.

Not sure how to wire it up. Any ideas? Can I use my existing VSR or do I need to change units?

    Cheers

Should be able to run them off your vsr provided it is rated high enough I run 2x100 amp aux batteries using a vsr they are connected by an anderson plug so distance apart is not a problem with good wire my fridge an ebay special runs for at least 4 days with both batteries together.

PS my VSR is a supercheap one rated at 100amps so they charge quickly also have an upgraded alt

The VSR is rated at 100amps and I have recently installed a 100amp alternator into the Defender.

I am still unsure how to wire up the third battery?

Do you wire the +ve cable from the proposed third battery to the VSR along with the +ve cable from the second battery?

    Sorry...I am a bit confused

    Cheers

I kept mine wiring as simple as possible anderson plug wired to one bat pos and neg then 2nd anderson to pos and neg on the 3rd bat, the third bat has about 2 m of wire so if i take it out of the truck it gives me some room to move but in 3 years i have not taken it out. The andersons are just like a jumper cable I have a volt meter on the 2nd bat to make sure I am getting good voltage thats all

Try drivesafe's traxide unit and website

I've got drivesafe's Traxide SC80 which puts out 40A each for 2 additional batteries. He has complete kits or just the unit but has beaut wiring diagrams on the website. Gives a discount to members too!

Andrew, I would be checking the fridge for correct operation, or battery for ACTUAL reserve capacity. My 60L Waeco will keep cool for a few days on a 100AH battery.

I would agree with that - I have a 60l ebay fridge/freezer and I get 3-4 days out of my 105Ah Allrounder depending on temp.

Garry I should've mentioned the 'teenage children' effect. Standing staring into the fridge for hours is also a problem when camping...
