I am assuming it is a 3.9 with hotwire. Is your 400km to a tank around town? If so I would be surprised if you would get much better than that.
Hi, A bit confused about how the settings of the TPS and MAF affect the performance of the engine. Am I right in thinking that
1. the lower the voltage of the tps = less throttle opening to the computer = less fuel injected = better economy?????
2. the lower the voltage of the MAF = less airflow told to the computer = less fuel injected = better economy????
3. how does the adjustment[ idle speed, I think ] on the side of the plenumn affect the running of the motor and what should this be set to???
Reason for asking these questions are
1. After setting the TPS and MAF to the reccommended settings [as per this forum], the motor is still running rich. [ down to about 400k to a tank]
2. Set the TPS and MAF to lower settings and engine runs fine but no improvement in economy.
3. 2 nights ago I fitted a bosch amp remotely instead of the Lucas one [no probs with the lucas] and a lot more power [ quicker acceleration, by seat of the pants ] better idle but still no better economy.
4. Sorry for the long post but any help much appreciated.
Bob

Sorry BigJon, its a 93 Disco V8 14Cux. Maybe I should of left it well alone as since I bought it I have tried to improve how it runs but looks like Ive messed things up. Used to get around 470ks a tank when I bought it. Yes, these figures are mainly around town with a bit of highway work [aprox 150 -200ks ]. The old story of if its not broke, leave it alone.

Remove the air cleaner and you will see the mesh at the front of the MAF
Remove the cir clip holding the mesh (Jewelers screwdriver)... Look inside the throat of the MAF and to the Left you will see a 6mm hole ... Shine a torch in the hole and you will see a filament wire ... Clean this wire with a spray of Circuit board cleaner
Also .....
Check the resistance of the EFI Coolant temp sender unit ...

....Did you check it's resistance??
I take it you bought it in late 2010, seeing you joined the board then.
The first thing I think of is that you have no real record of fuel consumption. To find consumption you have to fill to brim at the same pump on several occasions. To look at "tankfulls" is useless as you can easily fill to +- 2 litres. So you may have exactly the same consumption now as before.
The things that you have done (if done properly) cannot reduce fuel economy.
I have found a major determinant of economy is the amount of advance. You should check that your vacuum advance is working by sucking on the manifold end of the pipe and sticking it to your tongue.
You should also check that the centrifugal advance is working by turning the rotor a little and making sure it springs back. Check that the static advance is around 9 degrees and if not make it 9 degrees BTDC.
Other things you can do include checking the water temp sensor.the one with the injector plug NOT the single wire one as this just runs the gauge.
Make sure you have a clean air filter, good plugs, leads , dizzy cap.
It also helps on a 14CUX to drive around the 70Kmh limits in third in the auto, as the injector overrun cutoff only happens above 1500RPM and concentrate on taking your foot entirely off the accelerator on downhills.

Thanks for the reply Phillip. Yes, I have set the timing to 9 deg, new vac adv as the old one was not working, centrifugal adv working good, both with turning the rotor and by timing light, water temp sensor replaced with a new one but not checked as yet that it is working correctily, and always fill to the brim and rock the veh as well to let air out of the tank [ surprising the extra amount of fuel one can get into the tank, isnt it ] Air filter, plugs, leads, all new, cap good and rotor button [Lucas] good. Will try driving in 3rd and see how that goes. Bob
So how many Litres per 100Km were you getting at first and how many now?and always fill to the brim and rock the veh as well to let air out of the tank [ surprising the extra amount of fuel one can get into the tank, isnt it ]
I had another thought.Tyres. You haven't changed to MTs?
