Strange clicking noise
G,day I hope someone mite be able to help. Ive done a search and this ones not there. I went up the beach over the weekend and noticed a strange loud clicking noise... I think its coming from the front end of the car... Its making this clicking noise only under ecceleration and clicks faster as the car gets faster but theres no click when i back off the gas and also no click when at idle... So its when its under load... I cant feel any loss of power and its not running rough. Thanks for any help. Its a 98 v8 discovery. Mark.B

G`day Mark ,
have a look at the engine mounts and look at the fan shroud and/or blades for any clean/shiny spots .
If a mount is broken/come apart it could be the fan making the noise .
Also have a listen around the exhaust manifold , if leaking can make a ticking type noise .
At rest , under the bonnet , open the throttle by hand quickly , revs don`t have to build much . More after the effect , listen at the manifolds and look at how much the engine tries to move .
Be careful .

Possibly uni joints. Bad if they give up completely.
cheers

I second the exhaust manifold theory. I've had a factory cast iron one one crack, I've had a gasket pop out on a set of genie extractors, and I've had studs break on various Rover V8's and each time there was a loud tick under load.

I would be very suspicious of the uni joints on the front prop shaft.... If it goes it may cause great expense!!!!
Easy to check.... Undo the 8 bolts and drop the prop go for a drive and see if it stops... almost 85% chance it is going to stop...
Leave it at your peril!!! Especially at your vehicles age...
