    OK experts-What difference a Diff shim makes

    Following my post showing the diff bearings in my Quaife, I have removed all the bearings and will be rebuilding when I get the new bearings.

    The pinion preload depends on a shim stack and currently has a 1.83MM shim and a 2.03MM shim.Total 3.86MM. For new bearings it should be 20-35 inch pounds turning torque
    So my question is - What difference in pre load in inch pounds does one size smaller or larger shim make?

    The shims come in 0.05MM increments so the next smaller is 1.78MM.

    There is no clue in the manual or several sites I have now looked at on Google including the dana 40 instruction manual.

    I do not want to have to go out and buy a number of shims just on spec.

    i cant answer the question but i know when i was doing my diff rebuilds becuase i was unsure of what shims i needed i bought shimming steel really cheap and can get heaps of different sizes

    I don't know, I do have a stack of shims here, which I can post to you, use what you need and post back, with your old shims exchange, which I've done for others here

    I just alter when setting up, never paid attention to how much effects preload and I don't think it'll be an accurate way, the best way is trial and error
