Thanks Bob about the manuals not having a gearbox cooler.

AlienD2 - And as for the intercooler, I think I had a major blonde moment when I was lying under the rad with the covers off down there. Given the huge void and the diagram, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't there. Of course, it's at the top of the rad! It's there oops!

No worries Stallie, I have discovered owning a Discovery is one giant learning curve, and it is certainly different from any other vehicle I've owned [ blonde moments for me happen often], but we can only keep trying to understand as much as we are capable, and we are lucky to have this forum. I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Thanks everyone who's contributed on this thread, and its parent 'coolant leak' thread. I'm new to Landys, having got my first Disco - a 2003 D2a TD5 Auto just a few weeks back; since when I have had EXACTLY the same issue as Stallie - a small coolant leak, first noticed as a drip on the front left axle, downpipe & crossmember. It only leaked while running, never on the floor, so I was thinking 'hose or seal weeping under pressure and about to pop" - the previous owner was kind enough to warn me to pay close attention to hoses - the car is in beautiful nick with FSH, but has 172k on it.... he had the top hose replaced at the last service and suggested I do the rest as soon as poss....

So I also saw the same pool of coolant on the ledge under the turbo and got right into it... Anyway - it was an easy temporary fix - the blanking pipe had a tiny split that I bound up with tape and a second hose clamp to hold it until I get a chance to replace it properly, along with the other old hoses. Brittleness no doubt caused by proximity to turbo, with no protection from radiant heat (surprised it took 8 years to let go)

In the meantime, of course I busted the bracket on the heat shield due to the obligatory seized bolt, and spent an hour repairing that with 1" galvanised bracing strap and rivets - good as new.

So I'm not posting to add any heavyweight technical enlightenment to the discussion, mainly to reassure Stallie that his D2 and mine have EXACTLY the same setup, which, seeing as I'm in South Africa and he's in Melbourne, makes it, i think, pretty improbable that both his vehicle and mine have been 'modded' or have anything "missing". Don't know why they are 'different', but mine (and his, by the sound of it) doesn't have any cooling or heating issues, so maybe they just had something unnecessary deleted, or some other change made during the build at the factory (?)

Out of interest, my VIN is SALLTGM733A816003, Engine is 19P01297A, first registered July 2003.
As far as i know, mine is totally stock except for dual battery system and little black box engine warning device. It is the 7-seat facelift model, sold as 'XS' here in RSA with half-leather seats, ACE, CDL and all the usual, but not HK stereo / compass mirror and such.
It still has EGR, and everything works (so far, touch wood).

I'm delighted to have found your forum, and will be lurking avidly until I build my knoweldge up enough to contribute properly.

So great job fellas, keep it up.
