Discoweb: 100% Proof that liners are moving at 'normal' operating temps

Just wanted to share with you this interesting thread: 100% Proof that liners are moving at 'normal' operating temps & causing the tapping! - DiscoWeb Message Boards
Looks like a good reading for Oz Rover community - roasting an engine block on BBQ :-)

Whether it is only an issue on later engines or also the older 3.9 blocks used in the Discovery 1 and the RR Classic, I don't know.

When I bought my P38A in 2002, it had 117,000km on the odometer and I could hear a light tick, too (not loud like the engine in the DiscoWeb post). The dealer from where I bought it, couldn't hear it.

It began to use water so we replaced the head gaskets but it made no difference (this was before the liner problem became well known). It eventually got worse until I was using too much coolant and the engine had to be top-hatted. I still think the tick was from a liner moving up and down.

    That is just AMAZING!!!!!
And obviously there were no cracks behind the liner as there was no water use or pressurisation.
Must have been a practical joke by some unionist, who increased the boring bar size. I guess they became much looser over time with all the moving up and down.

WOW!!!! Is all I can say!!!!!

Interesting because I have no tapping noise on my slipped 3.9, just water in the number 2 cylinder, and water in the oil water only entered oil when it hydrolocked.

I have a 97 Discovery with the exact symptoms this bloke describes- engine runs fine, uses no oil or coolant, makes good power, no noises when cold- and once warmed up, people stop and stare as it goes past. I can hear the tapping from 150 yards away when it comes home with my daughter driving. I bought it cheap knowing it was a slipped liner.

Might be worth finding someone who can pin the liners, can be done with the sump off. MR automotive do this quite often from what I hear (they're in Queensland though)
