How to wire an illuminated switch??????

    Guys,
I feel as though this maybe the stupid question of the day...

How on earth should I wire this switch up to power my small pump and get the LED to come on (2nd switch down on the attached)?

Ive figure out the centre and one of the outer connectors is the switch, but I cant get the LED to light.

Im feeding +12V to the centre pin and take the +12V (when switch is on) to my pump, the earth goes from the pump back to the battery earth. In this configuration the switch works, but the LED doesnt and Im a bit stumped.

    Any pointers?

Just reading through the post and attachment again, could it be because the LED is not for 12V??

    Thanks
    Jon

12v +ve usually goes to the top pin, the unit your powering to the centre pin and earth to the bottom pin.
The LED takes it's power from the incoming source power and operates by referencing to the ground parallel to the accessory. As an LED is a diode, the polarity needs to be correct or it won't work however the switch will still.

The markings should actually be alongside the pinouts....

    Cheers

The second switch does not use a LED, the symbol is as per the 4th item which is an indicator light. I'd say your ok with 12V.

The third switch uses a LED, the symbol is that of a Light Emmiting Diode (LED).

To get the second switch to light up you need a ground connection to pin 3 and the power (+12V) on pin 1, pin 2 shoud be connected to your load. When you operate the switch to the ON position both the load and the light will get their power from pin 1 via pin 2.

Ok as said in subsequent posts the switch maybe meant for use with 240 V ac. still need an earth to pin 3 though.

i note it says 250Vac at top of switch specs...

I dont know what is what with sparky stuff...but could that be a 240v switch?

I see neons in the switch specs and they definitely won't light up under 90 volts. Make sure your illuminated switch has "12V" on it somewhere before expecting light from it. Jaycar has a range of 12V illuminated switches.

Over the years I have used quite a few Hella 4409 switches. These are a push-pull switch with a small bulb in the knob. The switch body needs to be earthed or the red light won't work.

    Guys,
It was the 125V/250V that was the problem. Got exactly the same switch but for 12V and job done!

I must have wired hundreds of these things in before and never had a problem, though I was going crazy Anyway, sorted now. Thanks for all your help.

    Jon
