Interesting comment, could you please expand on that? What do you actually mean? No offence, but it is easy to make a statement , can you back it up? Cheers, Bob

    back what up?
    opinions were sought,
    opinions were offered.

    The undeniable facts are--
    in standard trim,
    They run smoother,
    idle quietly,
accelerate faster[ much better torque off idle, which makes them better off road or on the beach]
are simpler to keep at peak condition,
they gather lots more favorable comments on the sound produced,
    fuel is cheaper,
and if on gas, running costs equal the Td5,,

They are no more or less reliable than the Td5,
the ratio imported was around ten(Td5) to one(V8)(this is a seat of the pants estimate- I counted ALL the D2's at Cooma,, [sneigy??])

    alright Bob?

Buy a cheap V8, spend the difference on a new 4.6 and rebuilt auto (if it is which it most likely will be) and get sub 15lt/100 on hwy and sub 20 in city. Plus you know the history then, and what has/hasn't been done. It turned my nightmare (9 of first 12 months off the road) into a reliable reasonable economical (for what it is) daily driver.

I'll tow a fully loaded car trailer plus all tools and 2 extra sets wheels to wakefield for a weekend and come back with at least a 1/4 tank.

Mate - just go drive them back to back.. I did on the same day and several days apart also, when I was buying new in 02...and for me there was no comparo..the V8 would accelerate up a long steady hill and the TD5 would only (just) hold on it. The V8 made the vehicle feel special, and luxurious and different. The TD5 lowered the tone to be honest...loud and shaky didnt do it for me. I didnt have a plan for LPG at that stage and was willing to pay the difference.

I got a 5 speed manual which is very nice and fast. I later put it on LPG which is very sweet. On petrol it would average 15.5/100k in and out of the city - some peak hour some not from the burbs and 20l.100k on LPG in the same conditions - ie cheaper than the TD5 on LPG.

The 5 speed V8 was a lot quicker than the TD5 in manual or auto..in fact you could stop pull over and have a cut lunch on a acceleration test (0-100) before the TD5 came wheezing along - there was about 4 seconds in it from memory (and it felt twice as long driving it...). I know, I know, the TD5 people say its all about rolling acceleration and not off the line, and drags are for children, but anyone who has to drive a lot in the city appreciates acceleration. Any I like the feel sometimes of giving it its head.

Mine pulls my 2 tonn Seafarer nicely with 31 inch tyres and standard gearing aside from that.

    Cheers

PS. The oil sniffers reckon that the TD5 with a chip keeps up with or is better with a chip and ECG block and other stuff. I dont know, but if you wan to go TD5 factor that in.

PPS. All the car guides at the time of D2 bagged the V8 for its economy and said that the TD5 was the way to go. My bet is a lot of people at the time took that to heart and didnt even drive the V8 in the stealers.

    PPS. Popcorn?

No worries, Pedro, you presented your views well, as any passionate L.R. owner should. Still not convinced about V8's, but I can see some good points in what you say.The choice, obviously, is up to the individual, depending on what you intend to use the vehicle for. Cant beat a diesel for low down torque, it might not get there first, but generally always gets there.Cheers, Bob.

Have you driven the 4.0L V8, it's pretty handy low down.
Then again, I've never driven the TD5.

Just a 10000km old crate engine, was welded in all the right places.

Next one will be the kicker.

CamRat, I've been hunting around, and found an article from 4wd action magazine, and considering I should practice what I preach, will reproduce some of it here, hopefully it might be some help to you.

    Specifications;

    engine 3950ccmpfi v8/ 2.5 5 cylinder turbo diesel

    power 132kw@4750 rpm/ 101kw@4200 rpm

    torque 320Nm@2600 RPM/ 315Nm@1950 RPM [note]

    transmission 5 speed manual/ 5 speed manual

4wd activation shift on fly, auto locking hubs as/ before

    fuel 95 L/ 95 L

rear diff open with traction control /as before

    comparison[ open to discussion]

    2000discovery V8

    purchase price[ average] 12,800

    average km's 147000

    insurance costs / yr [av.]$1200

    rego. costs [av] $950

    fuel costs/ yr. @ 20lt per 100 km's av cost $ 1.50 $6000

    SERVICING COSTS 10000 km intervals

oil $168 oil filters $51 Air filters $62 fuel filters $28

    Total $8549

    2000 td5

    Purchase price [av] $14600

    Av. km's 179000

    insurance / yr. av. $860

    rego cost av. 1000

    fuel costs @ 13 lt/100 km's av $ 1.50 cost $3900

    Servicing costs 5000 km' intervals
oil $360 oil filters $145 air filter $96 fuel filter $184

    Total per yr $ 6545

At 160000 km's the 4.0L petrol will need to have its drive belt, oils and spark plugs replaced.Brake fluid and air filter element need replacement as well. The TD5 engine, if not serviced and maintained properly, has a deservedly rotten reputation .... beware the vehicle without a comprehensive service history , walk away. The latest advice from LR is that with the modern synthetic oils the servicing interval for the TD5 can be stretched to 10000 km's [ I still do 5000km's] What ever you decide, you can be assured that with proper servicing and maintainence, you will have a vehicle you will fall in love with, Bob
