stock 3.5v8 efi camshaft vs stock 3.9v8 efi camshaft

    Hi Guys,

I'm in the middle of sorting my 3.9. Swapping bits from the old 3.9 (recond 10k ago but stuffed liner) to the newer 3.9 that has 250k on it.

I've looked through some invoices the previous owner had done and part of the recon included a camshaft part # ETC6099. I've looked this up and it says its for the 3.5 motor. I was going to use this cam and put it in the newer 3.9, along with the lifters as they still look like new.

Is this a bad cam for the 3.9? I wonder why a 3.9 cam wasn't installed? Thinking back when I drove it from Sydney to Rocky I was surprised at how gutless it was. I haven't driven a 3.9 RRC to know if it was gutless or not though. I suppose having coolant constantly in one of the cylinders wouldn't have helped, although it seemed to run nice and smooth once the motor was hot.

This appears a good discussion on the subject.

Did you keep the lifters in order so they go back on the same lobe as before, Regards Frank.

Yeah, both the cam and lifters are still in the old motor, but yes I was going to match them.

So it looks like I'll get good low end but might miss out on a few HP, No boubt that the standard 3.9 would be better as it's matched. Still need a bit more definitive answer, might ring around.

    Definitely a 3.9 cam.
Even if you have a 3.5, use a 3.9 cam as they will give it a huge low down torque boost.
I made the mistake of listening to the guys at TRS who sold me a cam that ended up being more for the 3.5, the Dynatec PC216 and confirmed by a work coleague who was State Manager for Precision here in Perth. Even visually the lobe pattern was smaller. I now have idling issues an it really lacks the low down even the old cam had.
Take a look at Piper Cams in the UK but unless your running a chipped or aftermarket ECU, stick with a stock profile.

Have done a post a couple of years ago on my woes with this.

    Cheers

    Andrew

The lift on an OEM 3.5 and 3.9 camshaft are exactly the same.

The difference is in the lobe pattern and overall duration. The 3.9 camshaft will as has been mentioned improve torque at lower revs.
