    Stage 1 gear knob

We'll today I fixed my knob. That is my stage 1 gear knob that has that dodgy rubbery thread forming insert.
We'll I cleaned all the rubbery solution by scraping and cleaning with solvent. Then I used a dremmel with a bur to allow a 1/2" unf nut to fit in. Took a 1/2" nut and put a few centre punch marks around the flats and arildited it in. Screwed it I with a lock nut and now solid as!

    Bubble bubble soil and trouble

The compressor has been running overtime hooked up to the wheel, forcing air in.

Lets do a test, there are bubbles through the soapy water past the rim.

The tyre must have some dirt forced into the bead of the wheel of 'Fred'.

Looked carefully at the tyre, there was no puncture in the tread.

    Completed my D2's 24th service at 462k today. Service book is now full. As would be expected, found more work to do. (-;

You can re-order new ones from Land Rover if you want to keep it all official like.

    On a different note,
Today I ripped the rear mud flap off while offroad. On the 90, if the flap is pushed back, it will always get grabbed by the wheel and be in a bit of a bad shape.
Mk 2 will probably be some conveyor belt rubber and some angle iron.

Horrible wet day on the North Coast of NSW.
Replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and fuel cooler o-rings.
Oh, and fitted a new ARB bull bar. Still need to wire up the indicators, but the fog lights and washer nozzles are all working.

Just picked up the disco from the exhaust shop had the front muffler removed. So far does not sound much different and not sure is has made much difference. May have slightly improved acceleration for low speed. Probably would not bother if I get chance to do it to another.

    Well, the news gets worse.
First the good news. The replacement governor is fitted in the gearbox, and covered by the warranty.
I also chose to get the gearbox serviced (new filter, replace leaky rear seal, oil etc) while they had it open, which cost extra of course, but seemed a good idea.
The bad news is first that the long-standing clunk in the transmission turns out to be a worn ball on the rear propshaft which needs replacing, so this has to be done.
Also, investigation of the oil leak revealed a new timing cover is needed.
And, just to inflict more pain on myself, I have asked them to do the timing belt replacement, which I was about to organize anyway when these other problems happened.
So, all in all, including the problems and the work I asked for, there won't be much change out of $1600.
Oh, and there is a slight whine from the transfer case, but I'm ignoring that for the moment.
So, there won't be much left from my tax return it seems, for the second year running.
Still, the old truck is 19 years old I suppose, so maintenance is important.
