Kicked it, yelled at him and scratched my head!!!!!!

Getting ready for big trip to the centre over Christmas. Last service noticed leak around tank on radiator, not running hot, never has but thought better safe than sorry. TM4 has always shown around town 88-90, highway speeds, out bush doing hard yards (maybe push high 90,s) and long hauls loaded up lucky to read 92 on a steady climb.(central northern Oz in 40+ deg)

Now after new radiator, thermostat, all hoses and coolant it runs hotter than it ever has. Around town 92-95, smallest bloody climb and will push 96-97 :mad:

Went for highway run, unloaded 100 kph 93-94 min. A long , reasonably steep climb where previously loaded I might push 99-100 at the top. Today half a dozen bends in at the bottom and I was pushing 97.

Basically running a consistant 5-7 deg hotter. I know the temps aren,t excessive but it's baffling. A car that I had 100% confidence in I'm now not so sure. Especially heading to Alice, Ayers at summer. Did Birdsville and west Qld this Jan not a problem. Now I have a car I don't trust.:confused:

Perhaps you just put an English thermostat in it which has a higher standard temp than an Aussie one? I had one in mine for years. Recently replaced it with the proper jobbie and it runs 5 degrees cooler all the time. I think there are 82 degree (Aussie) and 90 degree (english) types for most models. Is yours a D2?

Maybe problem sorted. Fingers crossed. Went to my friendly local Landie place and posed the question. No temp stamps in original thermostat, however, pulled 3 other ones off the shelf and checked. All same boxes, same part numbers, but!! Two stamped 92 deg inside and one stamped 82. One fitted was 92, so changing to 82. Fingers crossed all going well, problem solved:D

All good and sorted, temps back to what they were previously, prob 1-2 deg cooler.

So possibly a trap for young players. If your changing your thermostat in a D2 using part number PEM100990, as is stated it should be given VIN (mine is an 03) check inside the box.

Same number, box, manufacturer however two different items. Look the same outside, however inside one has a visibly larger diameter brass center and top plate is different. Also with a torch temp stamps clearly visible being 82 deg and 92 deg.

How and why that can happen is beyond me but there you go.

Running only a standard temp gauge you wouldn't notice. But believe me the difference is very noticeable. The increase and large fluctuations in my opinion don't bode well if your running anywhere it is constantly hot. Especially if your using it for what its designed for, working it and getting out and about in this amazing country.

A day of part completed tasks.

Installed the missing wiring down to the back of the D4 from the Traxide kit, so the fridge is happier with a permanent power connection now available.
Still have to fit the rear Anderson connector for the caravan (bought one of the flush mount assemblies) - next weekend.

Installed the UHF antenna and routed it into the cabin, but haven't fitted the radio yet - next weekend.

Removed left over mystery boxes and wiring (D4 belonged to a tour company) from under the dash and tidied up some wiring that couldn't be left that way.

Looked at the box for the brake controller - next weekend.
Sat down and had a cuppa.

Attended to a leaking SLS air bag. These were new Dunlops about 5 years ago so disappointed to see a lot of perishing at the fold where it is clearly leaking. I've put in the original Contitech I had kept as a spare while a replacement pair is delivered... That bag is now 13 years old. Ordered Contitech this time.

New front prop shaft went in today. A bit of a job, will never understand why people re use old nut and bolts especially when they are all rounded off. Had to resort to vise grips on the front diff end and a 14mm single hex socket was the go at the transfer box end.

Yesterday actually - Traced and repaired the fault in the left indicator wiring to the trailer socket. The result of a less than satisfactory repair following a rear ender a few years ago. Yes, it does pay to check your trailer lights ocassionally. ;)

Oil change & grease today plus general check over & I'll be ready for a quick overnighter with trailer to the Elong Elong area tomorrow.

Had to jump start George off the second battery today as he wouldn't start after being parked for 2 weeks. The start battery is the original and 6 years old so I guess its time for a new one. Pity it happened when the cash is going on Christmas presents but you get that I guess. Better do it before we go to Straddie next week.
