The plastic is pretty hard so I don't think there would be any difference in cushioning. The only reason I can think of to keep them plastic would be the issue of metal on metal corroding and perhaps problems with different metals electrolysing (spell check seems to think that is a word but I am not so sure, but you should know what I mean
). It would be impossible to keep paint on the surfaces as they just rotate against each other. Plastics like that tend to be self lubricating where metals require external lubrication. Maybe make some out of hard nylon or PFTE, or maybe just buy some from the UK as they are cheap there (not so cheap here in Aus).
