    Bonnet hinge bushes series 3

I'm soon to fit the spare wheel on my bonnet because I like the look of a land rover with a tyre there. I've been putting it off until I finish doing all the under bonnet work I need to do.

My question relates to the plastic (or whtever they are) bush that supports the series 2/3 bonnet hinge. Mine have quite a bit of play in them so the bonnet moves around when closed. Given the extra weight of the tyre, is there any compelling reason why these should be made of plastic which wears and ages? Why can't they be made of something a little more hard wearing like alloy or brass? It is something I'd be prepared to try and i don't believe it would take very long to do. Furthermore I don't feel that the plastic ones offer any flex or cushioning that would make them superior to an alloy or brass one.

The plastic is pretty hard so I don't think there would be any difference in cushioning. The only reason I can think of to keep them plastic would be the issue of metal on metal corroding and perhaps problems with different metals electrolysing (spell check seems to think that is a word but I am not so sure, but you should know what I mean ). It would be impossible to keep paint on the surfaces as they just rotate against each other. Plastics like that tend to be self lubricating where metals require external lubrication. Maybe make some out of hard nylon or PFTE, or maybe just buy some from the UK as they are cheap there (not so cheap here in Aus).

That was my reasoning Timj - they are only $1 each or so in the UK but unless you are ordering something else the postage is the kicker. If I could find some solid nylon or even fibreglass rod I might have a go at making some. Something like brass or copper maybe would work. Considering a land rover is half alloy and half steel and there is steel joined to alloy with alloy or steel rivets, the issue of electrolysis may not be as much of an issue - I think the door tops may just be the sacrificial annode!

This nylon bush is only used in Series 3/90/110/Defender, not Series 1/2/2a, and should be pretty cheap from any Landrover dealer or retailer. The free play is supposed to be removed by the rubber buffer that the bonnet closes against on the firewall, and it is likely that this needs to be replaced as well
