    300 Tdi serpentine belts

I have a parts list that includes two sizes of belt for 300Tdi Defenders, a 1580mm and a 1595mm. My parts supplier, based on the engine number of my '96 130 (16L22370A), has supplied me with the 1580mm variety. Upon removing the old one I have discovered that its part number indicates that it is a 1605mm belt. What's going on here? Why the differences and which one should I have?

There were 2 different alternator pulley diameters, and unfortunately some early 300Tdi's may have had new alternators fitted that have the smaller pulley, reqiring the 1580 belt. The small pulley measures about 50mm diameter from memory, the larger one significantly bigger at about 65mm.

My guess is someone has fitted the 1605 to it as the 1595 wasn't available, and yours is a pre TA Vin, (IE manufactured late '95, which makes it a MA) which needs the longer belt.

    BTW, What is your VIN?

VIN is SALLDKAF7MA965818 and it has the 48mm pulley (so should have had the shorter belt?)

MA should have the larger pulley / 1595mm belt, any chance of a pic of the alt?

It is likely someone may have fitted a newer alt, in which case the 1605 belt would've been VERY loose.

OK, so pre-TA VINs have the longer belt and larger pulley, post-TA the shorter belt and smaller pulley. But as long as you match the belt length to the pulley size it should be fine. Does that sound reasonable?
