On what grounds do you think that a bonnet mounted spare is illegal?

Mine doesn't impinge on the field of view requirements.

When measured to the std, a TD5 (same as TDI) failed with the tyre sitting on the bonnet.

Its not your field of view, its a fixed height from the seat base, at its furthest point back, from the seat cushion....

The bonnet stay is the standard hinged/scissor type. Seems up to the job.
Lifting the bonnet is a bit of stuff around that I've just got used too. Either a set of vice grips or the Mrs holding the bonnet release out and me performing a clean and jerk manover on the bonnet.

When I bought it (correct for a 300TDi Defender), Land Rover Australia wanted about $1500 for the kit. I found if you ordered it in spares, you would save yourself around $1200 (although in the end I got the kit in the end with the saving - right place, right time).

They might have been standard on the 3 door wagons and the 110/120 tray backs.

I have one fitted to my 5 door wagon by previous owner, it passed roadworthy no worries.

The vicroads document states 760mm above the back of the seat cushion with the seat in the centre of its travel.

This is how I measured it and got a pass, I'll recheck it.
