    td5 auto lock up

    To the ones in the know, I live in South Gippsland and seek some advice about 1999 automatic td5 on which I have just replaced the transmission.
    I was wondering if the ECU can be remapped to change the lock up of the torque conveter to 75km/h from 85kms/hr and who could do this. The reaon is that we tow a large van and travel between 80-90kph which causes the trans to search forlock up.

    Drop it into 3rd, it locks up in 3rd as well as Drive.

    Don't know of who could remap the lock up point. Try these guys, Manuel Automatics Pty Ltd, (03) 9464 5958, pretty sure they are ZF experts don't know if they work on the electronic controller side of things but they should know who does.

    thanks slug buner have done that but fuel consumption goes through the roof it tows great in 4th when loced up but the speed makes it search which overheats the trans will contact your reccomendation.

    Davis Performance Landys were talking about working on a solution for this years ago, but I'm not sure if they ever did anything with it. Ashcroft and an electronic box for the autos, buts its a lot of $ and complexity for that.

    Also try "S" mode which I think they tow better in.

    If it's a ZF4HP24E compushift make a electronic shifter for it. When I eventually upgrade from the 22 to the 24 that is what I will be using.

    ive read previosly on this forum about a place in melbourne that modifies the torque convertor to lock up at 80kph. try a search and the name is listed

    No didn't!

    The AT Ecu controls D2 TC lock up!

    Lock up changes won't effect the towing tendency to shift down or unlock.

    And noone should be towing out of town at bloody 80km/h

    Doesn't quite add up ...

    D2 Auto locks up at 70-72kmhr in 3rd / 78-82kmhr in 4th

    D2 Auto unlocks at approx' 50kmhr in 3rd / 72kmhr in 4th

    The above figures can be manipulated by easing off on the right foot to encourage lockup once the appropriate road speed has been reached.

    So towing in 4th at 80-90 it should stay locked up ... unless you're giving it boot going up hills ... and it will unlock as there's not sufficcient engine power developed at those revs to pull that load, in 4th up a hill ... at which point you should be dropping to 3rd & giving it time to lockup before going up said hill, then shifting to 4th as you go over the top.

    Maybe time for an auto fluid change/service ?
