Anyone interested in heavy duty DC drive shafts?

Im looking into getting some custom drive shafts made, mainly a DC shaft for the front, ive been talking to a local place that makes shafts for the mine vehicles at work and have been susing out some very nice parts.. I was also talking to him about a group buy if anyone else is interested in similar for there land rover.

This is the DC joint we would use, its a european made DC joint with 1350 uni's, pictured next to a D2 DC joint, this thing is huge and can handle much larger angles and torque then the d2 style joint. He recommends this joint as he using them on the underground drift runners that play in the mud all day and then have very little trouble with them. Apparently they seal up a lot better then the d2 DC joint and in a land rover should last for a VERY long time unlike my old d2 DC joint i had to rebuilt after every 20-30,000km.

The spline used would be the following, its huge and has alot of travel, its european made as well, and also used in the drift runners. It also seals up better alot better then the standard splines and should last for ever in a rover pretty much.

This pic shows the spline section at the bottom next to the standard size land rover diff yoke at the top right and what i think was the 1350 size diff yoke that will be used of the diff end of these shafts - the diff end will use a euro uni as well, it wont be a 1350 but something else the same size, apparently with higher angles and a higher torque rating, its also used in the under ground vehicles and SUPER strong.

These can be done to suit any rover including ones with custom length shafts and i can also get straight uni to uni rear shafts using the big european uni's and splines, cost at the moment would be around 850 for a front shaft and 650 for a rear, but if anyone else is interested and we can get a few people in on some then we might be able to knock some more off that.... they are not cheap, but they are about as tough and durable as you will get to suit a land rover, the main thing i was after was durability without needing constant rebuilds of the DC like the smaller d2 style DC.

    Anyone interested?

    Hey mick,

Baily-Morris in the UK will supply heavy duty D/C or wide angle front propshafts for all landy's.

You supply VIN number and they make the shaft. I got mine delivered to the door for $650.

It huge, greasable and the build quality is second to none.

    Cheers

Ok, found the info, they only use 1310 uni's still which are what is used normally, they do look good though, and they can also do 40dg unis which would be interesting. The shafts i am looking at getting done while they maybe 200 more then those from the UK they are a much more heavy duty shaft using 1350 series uni's that have a much higher torque rating and working angles over 30dg.

What company you looking at using - I had a shaft made by a specialist at Edgeworth and he was pretty good.

Same company Gary, that would be Gibsons, i've been dealing with them for years they have made and rebuilt alot of shafts for me for landys and cars i have had, we also deal with them for work doing our mine truck shafts. Chris is the guy there i always speak to and he is the one who has organised what parts will do the job. Like you said, they are very good and really know there stuff.

He build the front driveshaft in my 101. At the time he discussed the 101 rumble issues and was convinced that a bigger, rubber filled shaft (dampen vibrations) would work when combined with larger, finer needled UJs and longer splines - and not the use of a double carden.

The result was a driveshaft better than the original but the rumble and vibration was still there - when I found a suitable double carden joint I was going to take the lot back to him and get him to cut off the gearbox end if the shaft and weld on the double carden - I believe that his rubber filleshaft with, bigger UJs and a double carden would most likely fix the issue.

Have you got any prices on these double cardens as yet?

Yes - he is a good guy to deal with - you can personally discuss requirements with him.

    Cheers

So what sort of ballpark figure for F+R?

Any discounts if there are enough takers for a group buy?

At least one of the shafts on the county is quite floppy in the spline area (last I looked), so I may be interested.

The front DC shaft is about $200-250 more than a Tom Woods shaft too, which uses 1310 uni's.

Apparently Jeep Konnection in Melbourne have the Tom Woods shafts on the shelf. Supposedly their price is much the same as if you import one direct from the US.

If I am already running a D2 front shaft, would there be any mods needed to run one of these shafts?

is the DC greasable? the factory ones are sealed.
