These days the so called experts just follow what the computer says and don't bother diagnosing the issue with a bit of common sense. Repair by replacement until the problem is fixed seems to be norm these days - and let the owner pay for all the unnecessary parts.
I had a check engine light on my Freelander - the test book indicated an injection pump shut down issue. Took the car to three experts who all said it needed a new injection pump and injectors - approx $3000 worth of work.
The car would start from cold OK and run until it was switched off then the fault would occur - to me the pump and injectors were OK as it would run - using the information that it was a shut down issue I disassembled the shutoff solenoid - I found a small amount of crud in it that stopped it closing completely but still enough to stop the engine but the sensors had picked it up.
Now it took me about 10 minutes to fix and cost nothing - now I wonder why the so called experts could not have done the same.
Recently had an egr fault light ad code in my RRS - if I had taken it to a so called expert they would have replaced egrs for about $1600 but I sorted it myself - was just a dodgy connector to the passneger side egr and fixed at no cost.
Service centres wonder why customers are sceptical of diagnosis.
