Thread: Polishing Aluminium

This is not Land Rover related, I want to polish the wheels on my race sidecar. They have been polished years ago, but many years of racing for one set and sitting for another set mean there is pitting and scratches in all the wheels and one that wasn't polished very well when new and has pressing marks in it.

Is there an easy way? I have been doing the coarse wet and dry, medium wet and dry, fine wet and dry then autosol. Very time consuming and hard to get an even finish.

Should I do wet and dry, wet or dry?

I also have a set of wheels for my wet weather tyres, as they sit around waiting for rain, I want these painted. So paint, powdercoat or anodising?

I found out by trial and error that Penetrol (spray can version) and very fine wire wool worked amazingly well on my alloy motorcycle wheels. There was a coating of black brake dust etc on the rear wheel that was very hard to remove but the penetrol worked a treat. Also works well on chrome that is pitted and rusty as my front forks are.
