    200tdi VS 300tdi

    hey all,

what are the differences between a 200tdi and a 300tdi. Im mainly interested in things like block, materials etc....I have heard the 200tdi had a gurdle and that the timing gears are cast rather than pressed tin???

    lets get a list going.

    cheers,
    Serg

    basically the same.

the adaptor and mounts are different but interchangable.
the timing gear is similar but different.
the turbo hangs down and out away from the engine and not on a special manifold
V belts VS serpentine (although I have heard rumour control that the very last of the tdi200s were serpentined)
    fuel lift pump is different
    vac pump is different

since I have a pair of discos with one of each Im guessing that this weekend I'll be taking pics?

The bellhousing stud pattern is slightly different, but nothing some mixing and matching and drilling a couple of holes won't fix.

Manifolds and turbos are slightly different.

200 has cast/machined belt pulleys as opposed to 300 pressed tin. 200 Belt is narrower but no biggie.

Lots of other minor differences. Supposedly 200 heads are no longer available, however a 300 head will fit a 2.25/2.5D, so I cannot see whay a 300 head can't be fitted to a 200.

I believe its to do with the location of either a cooling gallery or an oil transfer gallery.

Better timing belt drive system. Possibly also not as prone to head gasket failure.

300 quiter and more power , serpentine belts make life easier. But crap water problem

But 200 tdi was the weapon of choice in the winch challenge events in the uk. But that is because in then you spend your life in mud and deep water. It is also seen by dealers and land rover garages as one of the best around engines that land rover have ever built. They also have a lot less repairs on them that any other engine from land Rover

But after all that I have 2 300tdi defenders sat in my garage at the moment . But have had 2 200tdi defenders and a 200tdi disco

Nope, all gone, no new ones in captivity anywhere apparently.

I have heard it said that a 300Tdi head can be modified for the 200 but don't know if this is true.

yes I know, you can do anything if you throw enough time and money at it......
