roll your own rods
Hi All
My Grandfather was a dairy farmer, who if still alive would have been 111 now. He showed me how to roll hot steel wire in a mixture of fine sand and borax to make flux, sticking it onto welding rods for use with the farms old single phase home made welder( still working after being built 50 years ago ).
I didn't see the process being done, but he used to go to a engineers welding shop to get his oxygen and acetylene bottles refilled, this workshop produced both of the gases onsite, making their oxygen by freezing air till it liquified, then drawing the oxygen off as the liquid air boiled.
The acetylene was made from adding water to calcium carbide.
Today I use a couple of angle grinders, a three phase ( pie heater ) pilot arc welder, carbon arc torch and a small gas / gasless MIG when I do my work, but I would like a plasma cutter and a TIG as well.
