The splined ones froom what I've used don't crimp up in the splined area. So they are useful for thicker materials (circuit boards etc) which rely on mechanical grip from the splines as much as compressive grip which has to be limited to prevent potential damage.

splined, but splined Nutserts are only really availalbe for a minimum of a 3mm insertion plate thickness. If you try using them on thinner plate the splines have a tendancy to cause incorrect compression in the splined area and you dont get a good bite.

The splined ones are also ment to be fitted into a slightly undersize hole.

I've been meaning to buy an RNHT410 from these guys: Rivet Nuts | Rivnuts | MemFast - industrial and sheet metal fasteners, tools and systems, but tried when they were having supply trouble with their new model. So I'll get around to it now they seem to have that sorted out.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
