I think its 2 teeth out retarded on the cam has the valves just touching pistons when rocking.
    Valuable information there- thanks!

Before the head came off it was running on a new gasket but with a crack between valves on pots 2,3 and 4. There was also that cap sitting under one of the exhaust lifters!

it ran very poorly , LOTS of smoke. So its possible these issues were the entire cause but seeing as there is evidence of timing issues I simply have to check that out before starting her up on the new head.

I happen to have a timing pin for the injector and lock for the bellhousing - is that all I need to check its in time? I know the belt was last done well under recommended change interval so If I find it to be in time I will leave it and presume the marks were made earlier in the engines lifetime.

    Thanks again.

the cam timing can also be out (which is what we're really worried about here) but checking that is a visual thing using the timing marks on the wheel and the block, the simple version of what you're up to is as follows

set TDC on the crank with #4 rocking the IP timing tool should then fit in nicely and when you remove the timing cover the timing marks should line up on the cam wheel.

If you cant get the IP tool in with the crank locked at TDC then the crank/IP timing is out.

If you cant get the IP tool in with the rocker crossover on #4 happening properly then the IP/Cam timing is out.

IF you cant line up the Crank with the rock on #4 or the IP tool inserting properly (but the IP tool will go in and is in sequence with #4 rocking) then the crank timing is out
