What ade says.
The copper washers either side of the banjo should be soft so that they compress easily and seal. Over time they harden and seal less effectively, you can overtighten them to regain a seal which isn't really a good idea, or replace them with new ones. Pretty cheap from your local auto parts store, or you can soften the old ones up by annealing. To anneal heat up with a gas torch till 'cherry red' and drop into water. This softens the copper up again .

As Deano says - annealing works great with copper washers. Just watch that they aren't getting really thin (ie thin enough that they are likely to break/split when you do them up). Can happen if the've been done a few times before.
Domestic gas stove will get them hot enough too if you dont have anything else.
