    Everyone I have been asked a lot of questions about transfer boxes lately and the fact is I have not played with transfers yet as I've had no need...

    Im not sure if it's been done yet but thought I may get a this thread started so that everyone can reference different transfers against each other...

    What I am thinking is any transfer case from any motor vehicle can be discussed just so it's noted for the sake of it.

    I'm thinking something like this:

    1.model of transfer (eg:lt230)

    2.what it's found in (landrover)

    3.what variants there were in particular ratios (lt230 has blah blah blah ratios found in this this and this model etc etc)

    4.strength (if it is not a lt230 compare strength to a lt230 so that us landy owners can get an idea of strength)

    5.input and output type

    I've been looking at atlas transfers and noticed 2speed and 4speed atlas transfers but I'm not sure what the go is with the 4speed and also been looking at NP205 transfers...

    Why I have been looking is because I'm not 100% sure of my ratio in my county so been browsing...

    Just a few brief comments:
    LT230's have changed over the years, not just the high range ratio.
    LT230R were early models that used needle roller bearings in the intermediate gear cluster.
    LT230T came later and used taper roller bearings in the intermediate gear cluster.
    LT230Q were later still and have so called "Quiet" gears. The gears have smaller teeth, so I would expect tooth strength to not be as great, however I've not seen reports of broken teeth.

    Apart from the problem of worn splines in the input gear, the main weakness is in the centre diff - one piece cross shafts from jackmac or Ashcroft, with good thrust washers overcome this.

    The Atlas 4 speed is a variation of their 2 speed, Atlas II transfer case with a set of planetary gears on the input side, for a wider spread of ratios i.e. IIRC. lo-lo is very low, then there is normal low, another reduction between normal low and hi, finally normal hi (1:1). The normal 2 speed has a range of lo ratio available from 6:1, 5:1, etc. Rear output is inline with the input, not offset like LT230.

    230 in the designation LT230, is the centre distance between input and output shafts in mm. The Atlas II is slightly greater (10 or 15mm from memory).

    The Disco 2's had variants of the LT230SE fitted:

    Transfer boxes fitted to this model have the prefixes 41D and 42D to the unit serial number. Prefix 41D denotes that the unit is not fitted with interlock whilst 42D denotes that interlock is fitted.

    Up to 03 Model year
    Whilst similar to LT230Q transfer boxes fitted to other models, the LT230SE transfer box has certain engineering modifications incorporated which are as follows:
    • Uprated torque capacity
    • Modified front and rear output and cross shaft housings
    • Intermediate gear bearing pre-load now controlled by a selective, non-collapsible spacer
    • Speedometer drive and driven gears not fitted for this application
    • Modified high/low sleeve
    • Modified front output flange and mud shield
    • Differential lock fitted to certain vehicles, but no longer driver operated
    • Fixed setting of differential lock warning lamp switch on vehicles fitted with differential lock


    From 03 model year
    The LT230SE transfer box is as described above for vehicles up to 03 model year with the following modifications:
    The following items are introduced on vehicles from 03 model year
    • Ribs added to main casing to reduce operating noise
    • Bearing retaining nut on the differential carrier has patchlock added to the threads
    • Interlock solenoid moved from main casing to selector lever assembly
    • Intermediate gears modified with machined internal shoulder and bearing circlips deleted

    The following items are introduced later in the 03 model year build programme and therefore may not appear on all 03 model year vehicles
    • Driver operated differential lock (if fitted)
    • High/Low selector shaft fitted with spring assist
    • Existing differential lock switch replaced by new design switch.
    • New secondary differential lock switch installed in the front output housing
