I should have added that I have two gearboxes that the cases don't have the shifters or bell housings any more as they have been removed, hence my question about the serial number.

Defender vs Disco R380s are obviously different. The shifter is in the middle of the box on a defender and in a rear extension housing on the disco.

V8 vs Tdi is fairly easy to spot as well. Bolt pattern and input shaft (spigot bush section) are different diameter.

Both boxes have the diesel engine sized spigot .
