    Td5 aircon compressor noise

Leaving Cairns in the morning for our Cape trip, and a D2 we are travelling with has developed a very noisy A/C compressor. Very noisy with aircon on, but doesn't go away completely with it turned off.
We've dropped the belt off and had a good feel of all the pulleys etc and the compressor one is the only one that feels a bit rough.

Since everything on the Td5 runs on the one belt we're a bit concerned that if it fails in a big way it could be a major drama. How likely is it that might happen?

Is the bearing easy to replace? eg if we bought a new bearing could it be done as a roadside repair if it gets worse?

it can be replaced but you need to get in with a puller set. I havent had to do one on vehicle yet, I think I could pull it off on a defender (and Id still be ubolting it and using all the flex in the hoses to my advantage) but would be dropping my normal confined engine bay swear words if I had to do it on a disco.

if its the pully bearing (the one thats working when the clutch is not engaged) then you might be able to prolong its life by hardwiring the compressor on and leaving the Aircon on recycle, with the fan and cooling set on high with the windows open.

Check the harmonic balancer because when they were out they become noisy and make a knocking noise. This sound is made louder by the air cond pump when it's on and still makes the noise but it's quieter.

Thanks for the info Blknight. Does the pulley bearing thats working when the pump is off stop rotating when the clutch is engaged?
If it does then it mustn't be that one as the noise is still there.
Will check if anyone in the group has a puller. Is the bearing a standard type? Any idea of part number?

Didn't think to check the harmonic balancer while we had the belt off. Will check it out.

no, it doesnt, the pully bearing spins all the time, check the pully for wobble while the belt is off and the AC clutch is disenganged then again with it engaged. If the wobble changes or the bearing quiets down with the compressor engaged then the bearing is dying but if it passes the next test you have a little time up your sleeve. Turn the clutch plate by hand with the clutch disengaged to get a feel for its motion then turn the pully, engage the clutch and if the pully begins to feel "notchy" when the clutch pulls in then the bearing is effectively dead and needs to be changed. Once the bearing begins to feel notchy under load then siezure and/or belt damage is not far off.

engaging the AC clutch simply takes some of the load off of the pully by putting it onto the clutch mechanism that is supported by the compressor bearings.

The harmonic balancer went on our Disco and it made a loud knocking noise and it's pretty easy to check it without taking the belt off. If you grab a screw driver and wedge it between the two halves of the balancer you can tell if it's that because if it's worn out the two hales will knock together and make a noise. The way you described the noise as not going away completely when the A/C is turned off sounds like the Harmonic Balancer and the best new price is around $900 and we got one second hand for $280 from a wrecker and that included postage. You can also grab a torch and see if there's any cracks or splits in the rubber.
