The round air filter is designed to recieve air at the end NOT on the side, see my pic, on a V8 in the pic, but is now on my Disco 300 TDi.
The disco 300TDi came with a round air filter and was plumbed in the side (Safari), the filters took no time to clog up and you could rotate the filter to a clean spot but only around 3 times and then it was cactus. The round filter getting it's air from the front as it was designed to do, lasted 3 times longer than a completely clogged round filter fed from the side, it's just commonsense. I swapped the V8 filter over (pic end feed) onto the Disco 300tdi and a filter lasts a good 12 months of off-road driving, cost a few dollars, couple of plastic pipe fittings and a few self tappers, cut the trumpet off the end piece and fit, easy peasy, Regards Frank.
