10 spline inner / 24 spline outer axle shafts
Hi,
I spilled down the rear axle off of a 90 today and found the axle shafts are 10 spline at the diff and 24 spline at the wheels.
Is this strange? I was expecting to find 24 spline diffs as the outer shafts were 24 spline.
Regards

Don't think its strange the later 88 inch Land Rovers had this as standard

I'm no expert here, but I would imagine a 90 to have a Rover type diff fitted front n rear, therefore it would have 10 splines at the diff and ?? whatever on the outside, similar to S3 109 fitted with Salisbury rear diff, 24 splines (invalid) on both ends of the rear, but the front has 10 splines on the inner side and 24 on the outside for the drive flanges, does that make sense?? cheers Dennis

Does that mean for front axle
10 spline at diff
??? At inner side of CV
??? At outer side of CV
24 spline at hub (I can see those)

News to me
Ive never seen a Landy axle with different spline count on each end.
Must have been made up - but why ?? I'd have just chucked a 24 spline diff in the rear, would have been cheaper & better
88's had 10 spline both ends of the rear axle.
Salisburys all had 24 spline both ends of the axle
Front inner axles can be 10 spline both ends & 24 on the CV shaft to drive flange.
90 front & rear were 10 spline up till around 93 then changed to 24 spline.
Would be interesting to see a photo of the half shaft.

Yes, all 90s except V8 and some military versions had 10 spline diffs front and rear until the 300TDI came out. The V8 and some military used a 4 pinion, 24 spline rear diff with "HD" 24 spline shafts. These were similar in spec to salisbury rear axles.
All drive members are 24 spline.
CV inners would be 23 spline.

Quite clear here
Rear-half-shaft - Land Rover Parts, Accessories & Spares From Brookwells
As I said late 88 inch had 10/24 spline rear axles (July 1980-1985)

Keep in mind, though, that when they did go to 24 spline diffs, they wasted the shafts down to basically the same size as the 10 spline shafts.... So all later model 90/Disco/RR rears with 24 spline diffs had axles no stronger than the 10 spline.

landrover go one step forward 2 steps back with drive trains...
countys front diffs are 10spline diff end, cv star 24spline, 24spline cv....defenders front diffs 24spline diff end, 32spline cv star,24spline cv....there is some variants in models in regards to cv dimensions mainly due to the introduction of traction control/abs systems rubbish and model change overs may have either as i dont think quality control is high on land rovers list..
