Question Wheel width in relation to tyre width?

I'm looking at big tyres and not sure what the relationship is between the tyre width and the wheel width.

E.g. with a 36 x 13.5" tyre what width wheel would be required to suit?
    35 x 12.5"?
What about a 10" wide tyre?

The tyre companies publish tyre fitment charts that list the minimum, maximum and 'measured' rim sizes.

IMO on a 4x4 you are better off staying near the minimum size rim for a particular tyre.

Where you lose a little in contact patch width you make up with slightly better sidewall and bead protection and possibly less chance of rolling a tyre off the bead.

The above calculator shows the relationship between section width and profile and the resulting circumference.

    I totally agree with Rick.

I'd add though, also investigate the tyre you choose specifically. An exception to this may be the Maxxis Creepy Crawler which can crown pretty badly when used on narrower rims. I have 12.5" (really 13.25") wide ones on 10" rims and they are fine.

I'm actually debating whether to get some 7" rims for my HD centres or just get the 6.5's cut out and re-welded for the offset I'm after.

    What offset are you after?

Probably 0 offset, so take the rims out 21mm which will increase the track 42mm, or maybe go the whole hog and make it a neat 25mm and be just the right side of legal.

I don't want to go too far and upset the scrub radius, but it should be fine with 255/85's.

What about 12mm more on a 7 inch rim?
