Hmmmm... I appreciate the responses, but still haven't really got an answer to my question. I acknowledge that different brands and models size their tyres up differently and therefore there may be some uniqueness in individual tyres, but I would have thought there are still some generalities.

What I'm specifically interested in is what is the widest tyre that I can fit to my standard Land Rover 18 x 8J" wheels before I have to go bigger. I currently have 255/70R18 which is around 32" diameter, and would like to go bigger in the near future so have been looking at what various options are available in R18 (e.g. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/sizes/...39;diameter=18 ).

You asked the wrong question for the answer you require.....

Let's start at the beginning, and with some info hey. What vehicle do you have?

It also depends on the overall tyre diameter.

For example a 33x12.5 R18 Kumho MT wont go on an 18x8, they need an 18x9 but a 35x12.5 R18 Mickey Thompson MTZ will go on an 18x8.

However, generally (apart from the Mickey T MTZ) from what I have seen any tyre on on R18 rim 12.5 or wider needs an 18x9 (or 18x8.5) rim as a miniumum.

So, I would say the widest tyre on the 18x8 comfortably would be an 11.5 inch wide tyre.

Two sites I have found helpful:

This tyre size calculator - Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing - tells you the rim width for each tyre.

Also, TyreRack tells you the manufacturers specifications for each tyre - Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels
