i have just put a true trac in the back of my D1 and love it, was thinking of doing the front but was wondering how it would affect the steering on tight slippery corners, anyone experiance with this would be great to hear

    Front and rear

    Hi Matt,
I have TTs front and rear, i cannot tell you the performance difference from just rear as I installed both at the same time. Vehicle is superior in all situations except when both a front and rear wheel off the ground at the same time (cross axled). Sometimes a dab of left foot breaking helps (easy in an auto).
The big change is to driving style, whereas before I had to rely on momentum in difficult situations, now I can focus more on wheel placement due to the improved traction. They make it easier to be a better driver.
It does change the steering as it becomes a bit self centering, however after a few days I got used to it to the point where I drove a mates D1 the other day and preferred the steering of mine.
    Cheers,
    Lee

With a front TT be aware, if you get it, it will centre very strongly at the straight ahead but, with my Defender anyway, in reverse it pulls the other way, onto full lock. Just needs getting used to but it does make reverse parking easier.

x 2. Same in my D2a - very strong self centreing. You can't be lazy and let the steering go half way around a corner and expect a gradual straightening - it happens a lot more quickly now

    X3

Self centring takes a while to get used..but once you do it is perfectly comfortable. I had the rear TT fitted first and then the front a few months later - it is a very noticable difference but you grow to love it.

x4 but only took a couple of ks to get used to, mate drove mine the other night and didnt notice-i think he needs a serious wheel alignment on his own 110
I have detroit locker in the back and truetrac in the front. there is a lot of bull**** on the forums about the truetrac/locker behaviour i think but thats just my opinion, if you believe 4wd action mag its not possible to have this combination in a full time 4wd

I have truetrac front and rear in my Defender, I installed the truetrac in the rear first and it made most difference to off road ability, then installed truertac in front later.

I did not feel the extra self centering effect but I already have a return to center steering damper fitted. The biggest difference you will feel up front is more oversteer when powering around corners and understeer when backing off in a corner. No big deal -you know its working. What I also noticed is increased front tyre wear over the rear tyres, about 20% more worn over 30.000 klm.

Aside from better off road ability is the other main benefit from fitting Truetrac in front is it is MUCH easier on CV's & Axles - You wont need to upgrade them. but if you installed True Difflock you would have to for sure.

Ive had maxidrive difflocks front & rear before & for Touring & general 4x4 trips if I was building up another Landrover I'd install Truetracs again over a full locker, they are much nicer on your driveline.

Just reading the above: Yes, I would go the Detroits again (TT front, Locker rear). Better (IMHO) than the others - cheaper and you don't have to think about it, its just there when you need it.

I have also strengthened my axles (front & rear) with maxidrive/HTE units and drive flanges and AEU2522 CV joints, just for peace of mind if nothing else.

The TT will understeer on slippery stuff, however, just a momentary lift off of the throttle (stops the LSD for just a fraction of a second) is all that is needed in most situations to get the front to grip and turn. The locked rear does tend push you straight ahead so I would imagine a TT front and rear would not induce so much understeer.

    Since I started this thread......

Thanks all for keeping the discussion going.

Awhile ago I started this thread and it's been quite helpful to get everyone's opinions.

I eventually installed a rear Detroit Truetrac, MaxiDrive Axles and Flange. I will eventually install another TrueTrac at the front because I'll be towing a trailer in the future.
Friends of mine from the Club also installed Ashcrofts front and rear.

According to the mechanic, Ashcrofts seem to be quite a strong unit (cheaper) but he's never seen a Detroit faulty.

We're all hanging out for a play to see the difference.
