    Diesel Return Line

    Hey folks,

A quick question: I am getting to the point with my IIA rebuild that I am actually starting to think about things like fuel lines and wiring, and I have to make some decision about the return line to the tanks (it's a 2.25 diesel). Previously, I ran a single return line to one tank and always used that tank's fuel first so that I wouldn't cause it to overflow. I'd like to make it a bit more foolproof. I've looked at the fuel filter housing and it has some blanked-off connections. Looking at the attached photo, the current connections are: bottom left - inlet from lift pump, top left - outlet to injector pump, top centre - return from injector pump. If you look at the blanked-off connection on the bottom right (stamped "3"), it's an unused inlet connection. I think you will have guessed where I am going with this..... Could I possibly run the return from the injectors to this point rather than all the way back to one of the fuel tanks? Would there be any issue with pressure etc etc?

I'm keen to hear from some who may be able to tell me whether this idea is viable or not.

    Thanks,

    John

It'll work but with 2 problems (well 4 but 3 are nearly the same)

    1. The return fuel from the injectors is the fuel thats used to keep the injectors internals cooled if you just circulate it in a loop it'll get hotter.

    2. The fuel system will be slightly more problematic to bleed

    3. Any air getting in will make the engine more prone to starving out.

    4. if you get an injector passing combustion gasses into the line you'll starve out.

Depending on where in QLD you are feel free to come on over and you can check out Fozz's plumbing. I've also got some left over fittings that you can mess around with.

My solution for multi tanks on a series diesel has always been to run one tank as per normal and then pump fuel from other tanks into that one via the breathers

    Hey Dave,

Thanks very much for that. It's enough to tell me that I may as well stick to the old system where I plumbed it back to one tank (unless I decide to fit an extra valve to direct the return to whichever tank I'm using at any given time). I'd love to have a look at Fozz's plumbing, but I'm in Maryborough - mind you, I do have family on the Ipswich-side of Brissie so may well take you up on your kind offer sometime down the track.

    Cheers,

    John

That is the setup on my tractor (Chamberlain 306) which has a similar fuel pump. Everything Dave says is correct - at present I am trying to find why it needs bleeding every time it is left overnight - probably an air leak somewhere on the return line to the filter.
