Looks like you've already sourced an engine but I was going to say I haven't decided what I'll do with the stage 1 now I have the county.

Thanks for the offer Will be calling round to your place later to drop back your torque wrench so will talk to you then. The Defender will run enough to get me to a depot in Alice Springs, so I'm not gonna touch the engine for now I think.

If it can be still driven and moved around short distances why don't you book a seat on the Ghan and put it on the Motor Rail to Melbourne and do the conversion down this way. We did the one way trip with the car on the motor rail and was quite a relaxing trip home.
    Cheers, David.

    1. It wont fit on the rail - a Defender without a Rack is already over height. So they wont carry it

    2. Ever priced that trip? Far out, our rail mob need to be charged with Rape and Buggery...

Thirty Five years ago, I hear of a couple who ran out of money half way around Australia in a Kombi, and had blown their motor. So they told people they needed a tow to the next town. They completed their trip around Australia that way, with lots of short tows. It did take them a fewmonths though.

I would look at cost of getting on a truck, or perhaps on a train to Adelaide. Or instead buy a very cheap running bomb with just a bit of rego, and tow it home behind that then resell the bomb. You can find going cars real cheap. I saw one for sale for $250 with one months rego recently.

A car like this would be sxold to the wreckers once rego runs out.

a leangth of chain through a pipe is good for towing, but may not be completely legal. The pipe can stop the towed car running into the car that is towing it. If you can find a cheap welder, do get a tow ball hitch added to a A-frame and chain that to your car to tow with-- if you are willing to risk a fine. I do not know legalities of this.

If you do this do make sure you have good brakes in the tow car.

I posted my above post without reaing the quoted post.

So could you put really profile Tyres on it [even bald ones] to get it lower to fit on the train. Bald tyres would be very cheap from a tyre place as they need to pay to get rid of these.

You may need to abandon the rack to do this.

Good old rovercare, onya Matt, what a generous gesture. At least now you will have all the bits you need together to do the conversion Mike, probably be able to glean some knowledge from him while you're doing it

Yeah mike, offer still stands, just let me know roughly when so I can make arrangements (clean the shed). Matt can drop said car off or I can get it, we DO need to catch up.
    Happy to help.
