    Question [solved] new head, piston now hitting valve ?

    put a "new" head on and now i cant put timing belt on as when all timing marks lined up one of the pistons hits a valve.

    its a diesel 4D56 in a pajero

    ive attached the engine manual

    I've no experience with that engine, but this is what I'd be doing:
    - Pull the rocker shaft off and make sure you can rotate the crank by hand 720deg without it hitting on the valves.
    - make sure the crank is at #1 TDC, and the cam is on the timing mark
    - back off all the valve rocker adjusters as much as possible (ie so the adjuster is only just protruding through the rocker
    - Fit the rocker shaft/rockers
    - Fit the timing belt
    - Rotate the crank 720 deg and make sure everything is happy and the timing marks still line up
    - Set the valve clearances using the method in the manual.

    so i backed off the cam shaft bolts, and the crank turns fine, backed off the valve clearance adjusters, and tightened the cam bolts back down, turns freely again, sigh of relief...

    looking at crank sprocket and flat bit of metal behind it with timing mark on, hang on...
    i can turn this, oh, now i see why it didnt line up to begin with and hit the valves the crank sprocket had slipped forward and allowed the timing guide to sit in gap between 2 drift keys and rotate around not marking tdc

    oh well have to buy a feeler gauge now to fix this all up...

    i forget to add, the crank sprocket had slipped forward, because the crank shaft pulley had been removed

    Ahhh - that horrible Mitusubishi thing.
    Did the timing belt on my daughter's '98 V6 Triton (6G72 petrol engine) recently and had similar issue with that plate. Its purpose is to trigger the crank position sensor.
    When I took the crank pulley off it pulled the timing belt pulley forward and the plate dislodges from the roll pin that locates it. There was also a small spacer washer involved and I ended up sticking the spacer and the plate together with superglue as it was impossible to get everything located correctly as individual pieces.
