Australian law requires car parts be made available for a period of 10 years from the point of time production ceases - so if Landrover Australia cannot provide this part or an alternative they can be prosecuted if a complaint is made.
This issue came up when Daewoo folded in Australia and GM as the major owner of the company had to give the Govt a guarantee that it would supply new OEM Daewoo parts to meet the 10 year rule. When MG/Rover failed, as there was no overarching ownership company at the time, there was no one that the Govt could hold responsible for the provision of parts.
I would say it is a bit of a furfy.
