Can I use it for spare parts or not?

hello all, i've just bought myself a farm fresh but lisenced 74 series III defender.
Its old, used and abused but fitted with a sweet sounding 186 conversion. She has the heaviest steering, loudest/rustiest exhaust, boldest tires and pretty much non existant breaks but I'm a sucker for old 4x4's and would love to see her in better shape. I have the opportunity to buy a series IIa for parts and beacuse this is my first landrover I'm not sure wether I can use parts from a series IIa for a series III. BTW the series II also has a 186 conversion. and not as rusty doors etc.
    What do you think.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Jarrad

    I presume that you mean a 1974 Series 3, not a Disco?

Most parts are interchangeable between a 2a and a 3 except obvious parts such as the dashboard. There are some differences such as the door checks that will require a bit of ingenuity to use, and watch out for changes in threads etc which will mean only complete assemblies can be swapped (e.g. hubs).

Are you sure it's a disco? Sounds like a Series landy (Defender shape)

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Hi Jarrad.

If it looks anything like my avatar (the picture next to my username) its a Series 3.

When fixed up they're a lot of fun to drive!

As John said, there are differences, but if it is a late model IIA (looks almost like a 3 including lights in the mudguards) most parts including panels would be able to be used.

I have a SIII Station Wagon with a SIIA 2.6 litre motor and it works very well and was easily interchanged with its SIII counter part which had seized.

Somehow I don't think that a Holden186 conversion on a Disco 3 would be a strong selling point!

Dont take any notice of them, the rivet counters get narcy if you call anything built before 1991 a Defender , [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_Defender"]Land Rover Defender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Its Landrovers fault, they started using the word 'series' again with a Discovery, to most of us old farts a 'Series LandRover' is a real Landy with Leaf Springs like what youve got.

    Yes mate,
you can mix and match the parts no problem,

you didnt mention if they were short or long wheelbase,

apart from the obvious differences in the firewall /dashboard, everyting else is swappable, the Series 3 has shyncro in 1st gear, series 2a has a crash 1st gear.

the series 3 LWB has the unbreakable salisbury rear end, series 2 has rover rear diff. the lwb has a taller chassis than the swb ,

swb & lwb have different rear spring perches, front ends are all interchangeable,

but pretty much if it looks the same you can mix & match.

Well, it's got me..... Where'd u guys see the word 'Disco' in his post??? I've read it several times and I can't see it!! Anyhow, simply put, yup pretty well most of it will swap about! Doors, bonnet, wing skins, door tops, rear tub, wheels, axles, ra ra ra.. The few differences as said before are:- lights in wings, synchro on 1st and 2nd in the Ser 3 (weaker gearbox). If it's a LWB, the Series 3 will have a Salisbury rear axle... Ideal for more power! Make one good one out of the two I say!!! Good luck!!

Earlier on it read something like "74 series III Disco".

P.S. to the OP - It's not a Defender, just a Series III.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
