Had one of the lads at work decide that the best way to remove a very minor blemish on a brand new aircraft windscreen was with scotchbright - an abbrasive pad - $50,000 later and a few hours to install a second new screen! If we have scratches in screens that impre vission then they get replaced as polishing is near impossible with glass.

I had a scratch cause by a grain of sand under the wiper - I tried everything but nothing worked - driving along a newly sealed road and received a couple of rocks and cracks on the screen - was replaced under insurance.

The only way to fix anything more than surface marks is to replace the windscreen.

Pardon my surprise, but polishing glass is possible. I've done it from scratch, so to speak... when I ground and polished an 8" telescope mirror.
From 40 grit right up to Jewellers Rouge. Cerium oxide will take out most scratches... given enough time. - Say a week or three of polishing...

Perhaps aviation glass is a differant animal...

When I did my mirror, such luxuries as sanding (glass) pads were'nt around, was all grits/powders and lots of water and mess.
    - And yes, ScotchBrite is murder on windscreen glass. - Did the sinner survive ?

Back in the days before windshield washers it was quite common for windscreens to have semi- circular scratched areas from abrasive dirt being rubbed around by the wipers. There were guys who went around and polished these marks out. They used a wet process with (so I was told) diamond dust and finished with jeweller's rouge. I had a used car yard at the time and had cause to use these services a number of times.
