LT230 Mainshaft input gear preload question

Fitting a new input gear complete with bearings to the 130 and trying to set the preload as described in the manual.
In theory it makes sense, 0.05mm preload on the bearings.. Measure the movement in the shaft with no shim behind the bearing cup, shim to 0.05mm more than measured

From my calcs I need 2.85mm, though the thinnest available is 3.15

The A+B+C=D as described in the manual doesn't make a lot of sense either

Am I heading in the right direction? Any advice greatly appreciated

The LT230 overhaul procedure says to fit a 3.15mm shim behind the bearing cup before measuring the preload. Perhaps try measuring the endfloat with the 3.15mm shim installed and see if that makes any difference.

    cheers

Ah so it does...helps if you read all of the manual...not just look for the page that has the right picture and work off that

Just done this myself and documented it in a thread about my Rangie. Photos and all. There is another thread in 'Projects and Tutorials' that has detail on the spider gear thrust washer replacement if you are doing that while your at it.

    Here's the post - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/1786903-post42.html

Got sidetracked doing the timing belt and now am back to fitting this gear ... As there is not enough end float when fitting the 3.15mm shim it all pulls up tight as expected.
I even re fitted the old gear, cups and cones, and measured end float was correct for the shim that I took out
The serial no on the box isn't the one that requires the gasket behind the bearing carrier, but this seems to be the only way I can get the required preload

Does anyone else have any suggestions ?

Bearing not pressed on enough or has a bit of crap behind it (either the cone or cup)? See if you can get your thinnest feeler gauge in anywhere behind a cup or cone.
