- Hi i have a 1997 disco V8 3.9 oil light is on has oil in sump motor rattles checked dip stick to see if oil level in sump has moved/dropped after motor has run it has not. I got an oil pump but is for 3.5 is wrong. Member Tank oil pump is built into timing cover, looks to be big job is it worth it motor could be finished. Can they take to running with on oil or are they strong and could still surive ? motor will start and run. My wife said when the light came on she knew she had to get home quick?

Taking the front timing cover off isn't that hard so long as you have the tools and skills to get the front pulley off and back on. However if its driven for more than say 100m with the light on you've probably got scored bearings by now. The only way to be 100% sure is to drop the sump and take a look at the bearings.
You could possibly find another engine but fitting one is a two day job at least for a beginner.

SubscriberCould also be a jammed/ buggered relief valve in the filter housing, this problem has been mentioned here before.
