3.9 Rear main bearing cap oil seals
Guys, any hints on replacing the cross shaped seals and sealing the rear main bearing cap?
Had a substantial oil leak at the rear of the sump and when sump removed etc wasn't the rear main seal (no oil leaking into the bellhousing and down back of transmission inspection cover). All these seals were done as part of total engine rebuild 50K ago but leaked from get go. I think the cross seals were cut off and read in the manual that this is a "no no".
Also how important is the Hylomar applied to the top face of the bearing block?

See http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ml#post1705504 for some pictures of where I applied sealant. Note that while it looks like I applied the same stuff to the bearing, that's assembly lube.
I had the chance to inspect the seal when I recently did a gearbox swap about 28,000km after the engine went in. Dry as a nun's habit. Once the cap was in place sliced off the excess protruding from the cap. Further down you can see the application of sealant to the base of the block and cap before the sump went on. I've since replaced that cork sump gasket with a paper one for other reasons. Doesn't leak.

V8 rear main/sump sealing.
In all of the rebuilds I have done, I replaced the cruciform seals. Use a good quality rear main crank seal.
I use brake cleaner to ensure oil free contact surfaces.
Just a smear of quality sealant with the seals (in the recesses), but all the components were otherwise dry. A TINY smear of sealant along the rear edge of the main bearing carrier helps. It is hard to get all the surfaces sealing against each other dry and oil free because of the oil seals and bearings in the vicinity, but it can be done.
