Thread: Oil Bath Air Filters

Talking oil bath filters generally, does the air intake pipe actually go into the oil in the reservoir and the air bubble up then go through the mesh and then to the carby or does the air intake pipe just end above the surface of the oil so the airflow just disturb the surface of the oil in the reservoir so that a "oil mist" is picked up and when the airflow turns to go back up, the mist is caught by the mesh along with fine dust particles.

I have been rearching the operation of oil bath air filters and have been getting conflicting information.

As I understand it, the sudden change in direction of the air sends larger particles into the oil res., and oil mist deposited on the wire mesh catches the smaller ones. All the filters I have seen have the intake pipe slightly above the oil level, don't want oil being sucked into the engine. (especially with a diesel)
