    LT95 - Hard to select 4th.

I posted that I was having this issue on my other thread - Knock knock, but haven't had much of a response apart from. Sitec - thanks mate. I need to drive my 101 over 300KM tomorrow to get home and I was having troubles today selecting 4th gear. Not sure if this is something the box is known for or if I have an issue with the linkages.

I had the engine cover off today to retard the timing and I've checked to make sure that is not obstructing the shifter linkages at all, so can anyone offer a suggestion or advice?

If I can't get it into 4th in the morning, it will have to go home on a tilt tray which would be a real pity to end a 3,500KM adventure in it.

    Cheers - Gav.

    G'day Gav,
4th engagement is not a normal problem with the LT95, is there any other symptoms that have appeared around about the same time. Linkages would be my first check. Try it like a crash box and engage without using the clutch, get the revs right and it should slip in.

Why would you need a tilt tray - 3rd gear overdrive - nice gentle drive or put in 4th gear before start and stay in it.

I do not know enough about the gearboxes to comment but I did once tighten up the linkage bolts too tight on the gear lever and on the the top of the gearbox and that made gear changes difficult so have a look at these.

    good luck

Yeah, couldn't find anything on the net that suggested this, so it must be something like that. Box has been fine until I took the engine cover off today, but I took it off again, and even with it off, I can't select 4th.

Unfortunately most of my trip tomorrow will not allow me to have a 'gentle' drive in third with the OD in. That would still only have me going 70 odd and I'll be on freeways going through Melbourne. Not something I am willing to try. I may yet have o entirely strip out the back so I can get the gearbox cover off and see what is going on. I could just about live with manually selecting 4th somehow once I hit the freeways and going from there.

Time will tell, I'll report back tomorrow if/once I get home.

Definitely sounds like a selector problem to me Gav, thinking you may have moved something when you removed the cowl. I would recheck the linkage setup and if all else fails start off in 4th low range and then double clutch and move to high range, that should help on the freeway. If you have .996 ratio 4th is good from 40K onwards.

Not sure of the final drive ratio, but it is bloody low on the 101.. I could if need be pull away in 4th. Without the trailer on I never even use 1st gear, it pulls away in second as well as any other pulls away in 1st.

Sound like it may have the standard ratio of 1:174 which should make it easier to start off in 4th. Low range ratios are the same for the LT95 in all applications.

    Good Luck

I wish you well for the final leg of the journey.
It would be a shame for the final leg to be troubled.

Hope you can find a solution in the morning.

    Cheers,
    Richard

PS. apologies for not being able to offer more than good wishes for a successful completion of the journey.

CRC each linkage joint, back each Nyloc Nut off half a turn (making sure the bolt is still thru the Nylon bit), soak the lever ball in oil dripped from the dipstick, and lift the rubber gaiter on the box and do the same.... Can't think of anything else that'd have moved/changed... Will b out with mine shortly, and will post if I think of anything else while looking over it. Good luck today!

    Well, I'm back home.

3,350KM in the last 2 weeks.

I have worked out what is wrong with 4th, but no idea how it happened. Took off this morning and 4th was VERY hard to select. Thought I may have to drive it home all the way like that, but after stopping for fuel, went through the gears again - 4th hard to get, but a little more manageable. A couple of shifts into top later, I find that it is grinding going into gear. Tried a few times, and now it's easy to get 4th, but if the revs aren't matched, then grinding of the gears happens, so I'm assuming there was an issue with the 4th gear syncro which I have now destroyed...

Rest of the trip was uneventful and now I can get 4th easy - but just have to try not to grind things too much.

It's a box out job, and I'll take the opportunity to upgrade the bearings in the TC and renew all parts that are needed. Although it is running engine oil now, the PO had gear oil in it, so not sure if this has led to a failure. I'm guessing better to do it sooner than later while everything still sort of works, rather than wait for a major failure.

I'll do some reading and find a good workshop manual for the box, then I'll continue on with that side of it in my 101 thread.

Thanks for everyone's ideas and well wishes.

    Cheers - Gav
