This is great info, I am going to take it to them today. It is a little louder than a tick, it is more like a cluck. But definitely worth the mention.

    Thanks

Just another thought, could be the flex plate cracked. Certainlt not unheard of, makes a metallic tinging/pining sound as it rotates it flexes and the crack tweaks over the edges. Mine was and didn't even know it thought it was a lifter/bearing or something in rotating mass. About 30pounds from ashcroft by memory, order a new large torque converter while you're at it (or even a new 4HP24 box is theres a heap of k's on the current one) it'll transform the car.

    Then add ATB diff centres,
    CDL lever
    transfer kit
    axles and CV's
    wish list
    wish list...

Check the exhaust manifold / gasket to see if it's tight and gaskets are still there.

    G`day Mark ,

there was a faulty batch of rocker arms that gave a similar noise to the one your chasing .

The metal insert either displaced or fell out all together .

The then problem was for earlier than your model but maybe worth a look if it`s apart again .

A LR bulletin gave the cast # of the arms , can`t find it .

Been a little quiet here, but, the head is off, and it has been sent to the engineering company who is going to do whatever it is they do to cylinder heads, but having a look at the pistons and gaskets etc... All looks very good. I will hopefully hear from the guys this afternoon, and will post an update as soon as I know. I have uploaded a pic of engine with the head off.

The guys in the shop had a look at the rocker arms, and say all is okay. I have not yet checked the manifold and gaskets, but will do so when I am at the shop again.

My biggest question, is how would I look to see if it were a sleeve that has dropped or moved.

If it were a flex plate, where is it... Sorry, I dont see it in the book.

Thank you all for the input and ideas, I really appreciate it.

Flex plate is on back of the engine, tying the crank to the torque converter.

Make sure they hardness test the heads.

Awesome thanks, will let you know. But would this make a noise while idling as well, or when driving only or both?

They need to look very carefully around the cylinder bores at the top of the deck. What you are looking for looks like a crack around the liner where its pushed into the block, you may see that the carbon has a distinctive ring around it. I have seen them with about 1 mm of gap from the top of the block to where the liner is sitting below the the block, thats worst case.
you may however see nothing as the liner may be in its uppermost top position , so it will be hard to identfy.
    here is some more info
    Slipped/Leaky Liners Poll

re the flex plate..normally heard at idle in drive with a little load on the engine..ie foot on brake and gentle accelerator..I have had both on my rangie..liner and then flex plate
    Brad good luck

Mine was at idle, went away (or just got covered by the noise) with revs. Was a metallic ting sound.
