First K&N filter clean, I wish I had millions of dollars

Found this on ABC Science:

In regards to the "fuel saving device" fitted to the inlet piping (I believe called the "Hiclone" device). Mercedes use a similar device in some current models. Like all myths it's based on a grain of truth. It's been well known that laminar flow separation and inlet tract turbulence can be a major benefit in the way air moves to the inlet valve and past it into the combustion chamber. However, the entire inlet system needs to be carefully designed to take advantage of these effects. Jamming a turbulator (i.e Hiclone) somewhere in the inlet ducting will do absolutely zip, as any turbulence introduced there is quickly dissipated by the throttle body butterfly, inlet plenum, the division of flow to the individual inlet runners and the shape of the inlet runner itself. In short, it's yet another load of crap. There are fuel saving devices that can produce fuel savings, but are expensive to fit, insurance companies hate them, and the media paints owners of them as some sort of miscreant. I am of course talking about turbochargers.

I once had a K&N filter and, just for a different point of view, I don't like them. Nothing to do with filtering, just too lazy to wash and re-oil. Prefer just to put a new paper element in every now and then.

The D2 airbox comes standard with a Hiclone, also I think the Defender TD5 as well.

I have the TD5 and use paper, dust did get past but was due to poor sealing, I think the Coopers brand has some inconsistent quality issues in the seal area, I have had a couple that differ in the height and width by up to 2mm. Not a lot but seems to affect the sealing to the top lid. I had some dense foam with one side sticky that I cut to size and ran around the top box cover. When the lid went on forced a very good seal and takes out the manufacturing inconsistencies.


I also had a K&N on the previous 300tdi and I thought it did a good job of filtering, when I put this on the TD5, it filtered ok but the oil did migrate to the MAF and caused havoc. So back to paper.............


Does anyone want to buy a cheap K&N better suited to a 300tdi?????:D

I never had any issues with either the Explorer or TD5 D2 getting oil in the MAF with the K&N or UniFilter.

Also I'm pretty sure Cooper make the OEM paper filters for Land Rover.

Bottom line, K&N's don't filter dust worth a damn in dusty conditions.

Okay, so...

Using the Td5 example, we know they have issues with airbox sealing from factory (understatement).
We know that people who use paper filters that grease the lip or use a foam seem to minimise this.
So why do the K&N crowd rave about them if they let so much dust in?
Perhaps the oil/foam of a unifilter/K&N does a similar job in sealing the lip, so there's less visible dust in the intake but more slipping through to the motor?

Basic psychology/human nature.

We feel the need to validate a purchase otherwise it may reflect badly on us. (It doesn't, but that's how our insecurities lead us to think ;) )

I used K&N's in race cars and they were fine, they worked well and as intended, in one application we actually made more power on the dyno than sans air filter, and a few HP better than a PiperCross (oiled foam) that's why I initially purchased one for the Tdi from one of my old race car parts suppliers a long, long time ago. (but pulled it after 20,000km)

Post purchase rationalization aside, there has to be a reason as to why people physically see less dust when using K&Ns, unless the only experience they have prior is a case of crappy filter quality or severe operator error.

I agree with seeing the holes and not expecting them to filter but they do. I saw an explainantion years ago. I cant even remember if it was a video or text but the claim was the particles are attracked to the cotton by static. I believed that as much as I beleive in hiclones.

I dont really know how it stops large particles of dirt going through. Maybe it's magic. LOL

I only managed to rip one out of 3 and as soon as I found it I replaced it.

I dont really think the flat panel filters are suited to dusty work as the paper filters dont usually have the wire mesh to hold them together. The barel type filters however, always seem to have a sleave through the middle to stop them collapsing.
