First K&N filter clean, I wish I had millions of dollars

My D1 V8 and ranrover has a silly barrel filter that I had to clean out the intake.
I would not use a K&N in that box.


D2 V8 has dozens of hoes drilled in it and is ill fitting--and had new heads and cams fitted when I purchased it.-have not road used it.

The K&N filter has much larger holes in it, these are what let's the particulate through as opposed to a standard paper filter.

That is why they breathe a lot easier, hence inclreasing performance and lowering the quality of the intake air.

The physics can't be argued with. No matter what oil you use it will suck the fine stuff through.

It is not quite as simple as that. (Air) filters are not sieves. If all else is equal, filtration efficiency is inversely propostional to the fibre size in the filter. K&N use coarse cotton (?) fibres these days, which are inherently less effective at capturing particles.

So in short - you could have a filter with visible "holes" however composed of nano-fibres which would still be highly efficient at capturing dust.

And conversely, if you have a filter with visible "holes" and no nano fibres across them it's likely to be utter poo at capturing dust?

I like to keep it simple.
I will stick to using my oil bath filters.
Nothing to go wrong and easy to service in the bush:D

Actually. We have these guys posting that K&N are no good because you can see through the holes. An oil bath filter uses hugely coarse gauze in comparison to a K&N but many still rely on them. The gauze is so open you could pour beach san through it. As far as I know they reply on the air changing direction, inertia letting the particles go straight and ultimately becoming stuck in the oil. I think that's exactly what a K&N does but just with moderns sticky oil and cotton fibre rather than wire gauze.

As I said before, had one for ten years in my Toyota, intake is clean after filter, but here is a test of various filters that have some food for thought.
